To you, the mention of lace has always conjured memories of dear old Gran lazily teetering in an old mahogany rocking chair. As loveable as she might be, your grandmother’s closet has always left much to be desired. Her stuffy wardrobe of long sleeved, ruffled tops and awkward shin-length, A-line skirts seemed to have been cut from the same spool of overly ornate lace, which has branded the fabric a fashion faux pas in your mind. Well, it might be time to embrace lace because this fall fashion has re-imagined the possibilities and has given it a good name again. Lace is rejuvenated this season and is strutting it’s stuff on runways all over, giving the traditionally stuffy material a chic new attitude. One of the most malleable materials, lace can go from romantic to rock and roll chic. That is why this autumn the infamous fabric is being used to create looks that show some skin in an otherwise covered-up season.
From feminine to fierce, lace is the centerpiece of collections from most of the heavy hitters in the fashion world. Designers such as J. Mendel (above left), Prada and Derek Lam are using lace in a more subdued setting. Elegant, simple silhouettes are given a bit of texture with lace in delicate sepia and grey tones. Some fashion houses, like Chanel, have given the Victorian look a modern spin, layering lace in mini dresses and sexy tights, while others have taken the fabric to a whole other level. Phi (above) is using stiffly structured lace over bright fuscha to create truly modern looks. These lacy styles are so sexy; they will have you asking- has Gran got it going on?
