I have started to notice something these days, and its that personal style has become more dominant than the trends we read about in magazines. Yes, of course there is ALWAYS that key item that will make its way into our closets, but I am talking about how many of those items there are right now .
For example, right now we have the skinny jean, the wide leg jean, the low rise jean, the high rise jean, and candy-colored jeans. The thing is, if you were to wear any one of these styles, you would still be fashionable. What has gone out of style is showing off your thong when you bend over and the unsightly muffin top (muffin top - when the waste-band on your jeans are so tight that you spill out over the sides like the top of a muffin over its base.)
A Similar thing is happening with our tops and dresses - we have empire wastes, fitted, low cut, high neck, long tunics, shorter tops, vests, —its a free for all!!! We can be sexy and wear low cut, wear backless, show a little bit of the midriff if you must, but please wear it right. Maybe this is just in my head, but gone are the days of flaunting every last inch of our bodies. We are more interested in the sex appeal of what is NOT shown - a much more classic look. Of course we still wear our push-up bra’s and drive the boys wild with our feminine mystique, but we simply don’t force it on them. When dressing on the more scandalous side, there is a fine line between tasteful and trashy and, barring a costume party or a dare, we should always try to stay on the side of tasteful.
What is tasteful? Of course it’s not for any one person to decide - but dress in a way where you respect yourself so you demand the respect of others. Our clothes should make us powerful and that is why we get noticed - not because we are spilling out of them.
Over the last few years we have seen a huge shift in the fashion world for women. There are more options out there for more types of women. We can all dress fashionably, and not just super models or the wealthy. Fashions trickle down much faster these days - knock offs are available what seems like moments after the high end companies launch a new style.
My advice? Where whatever you want. Be who you are. Fashion is so personal and trends should be followed only if you look good and feel good in them. If not, make your own trends! Make your own style - fashion is outrageous so turn some heads, just make it because you look incredible, and not like a disaster.
Here’s a tip: Look into a magical trick called dress tape or fashion tape. All it is are bits of double stick tape that will basically tape you into your dress. Do you have a strap that always falls down? Or does the plunging neckline ever seem to plunge too much? Fashion tape will keep it in place, and the individual pieces are small enough that its easy to bring extras along wherever you go. Its even a fix for those button down tops that start to pull open at the bust line - just tape the pieces together (but if you’re too busty for the shirt and the tape doesn’t work, find a better shirt!).
